The retina is a thin, light-sensitive layer located at the back of the eye. Its function is essential: to capture images and send them to the brain through the optic nerve.

Any alteration in this structure can compromise vision, so recognizing warning signs early is key to preserving eye health.

1. Blurred or distorted vision

If you notice that straight lines appear wavy, bent, or with blurry areas, it may indicate an alteration in the macula — the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision.

2. Loss of central or peripheral vision

Losing part of your visual field — whether in the center or on the sides — may be a sign of a retinal detachment or a condition such as diabetic retinopathy.

3. Flashes of light (photopsia)

Seeing flashing lights, especially in the dark, may indicate traction or a tear in the retina. This symptom requires immediate medical attention.

4. Floaters or dark spots in vision

While some floaters are normal with age, a sudden appearance or an increase in their number can be a sign of a retinal tear or detachment.

5. Shadow or curtain in the visual field

Feeling as though a shadow or curtain is covering part of your vision is an urgent warning sign. It may mean that the retina is detaching.

6. Sudden changes in vision

Any sudden change in vision — even if it goes away quickly — should be evaluated by an ophthalmologist. Some retinal diseases can progress rapidly.

Timely consultation protects your vision

Early detection makes the difference between preserving and losing sight. At Instituto Espaillat Cabral, our retina specialists use state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment to identify and treat these conditions promptly.
