Contact lenses are an excellent alternative to traditional glasses, but not all are the same or cared for in the same way. Choosing the right type and maintaining good hygiene habits is key to avoiding infections and discomfort.

Types of contact lenses

1. Soft lenses (the most common)

They are comfortable from the first use and easily adapt to the eye. Ideal for daily wear.

  • Daily wear (removed at night)
  • Extended wear (some allow sleeping with them, under medical supervision)

2. Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses

They are more durable and can provide sharper vision in some cases (such as high astigmatism), but they require an adaptation period.

3. Toric lenses

Specifically designed to correct astigmatism.

4. Multifocal lenses

Allow you to see clearly both near and far. Ideal for people with presbyopia (+40 years old).

5. Disposable lenses

  • Daily: worn once and discarded
  • Biweekly or monthly: require cleaning and proper storage

How to choose the right type?

It’s not just about preference. It depends on factors such as:

  • Your visual condition (myopia, astigmatism, etc.)
  • Lifestyle (screen time, sports, travel)
  • Tear production (dry eye or not)
  • Your ophthalmologist’s recommendation

Basic care (this is the most important part)

1. Always wash your hands before handling them

Prevents infections like conjunctivitis or keratitis.

2. Use the proper solution

Never use water, saliva, or homemade solutions.

3. Respect the wearing schedule

Do not extend their use “just because they look fine.” This increases the risk of infections.

4. Do not sleep with them (unless your doctor says otherwise)

Sleeping with lenses significantly increases the risk of complications.

5. Clean and replace the case regularly

Ideally, change it every 1–3 months.

6. Avoid contact with water

Swimming pools, showers, or the ocean can contaminate the lenses.
