Let’s Talk About Home Remedies for the Eyes
12 June 2025
When your eyes feel dry, irritated, or tired, it’s common to look for quick relief at home. However, not all home remedies are safe. Some can help, but others may cause more harm than good.
What You CAN Use
1. Lubricating eye drops (artificial tears)
- They relieve dryness, burning, and the gritty sensation in the eyes.
2. Cold compresses
- They reduce inflammation, redness, and swelling of the eyelids.
3. Visual rest
- Helps prevent eye strain, especially if you work in front of screens.
- Helpful technique: Follow the 20-20-20 rule → every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet (6 meters) away for 20 seconds.
4. A diet rich in antioxidants
- Nutrients like vitamins A, C, E, lutein, and omega-3s help maintain good eye health.
What You SHOULD NOT Apply to Your Eyes
1. Chamomile
- Although very popular, it can cause allergic reactions or contaminate the eye if not properly sterilized.
- Even cold tea bags may carry harmful microorganisms.
2. Lemongrass, lemon, vinegar, or garlic
- These are highly acidic or irritating. Applying them to the eyes can cause burning, inflammation, and even corneal damage.
3. Essential oils
- Should never be applied directly around or near the eyes. They are very concentrated and can cause chemical burns.
Eyes are extremely delicate. If you experience persistent discomfort, blurred vision, pain, or light sensitivity, don’t self-medicate—consult a specialist.
