A corneal ulcer is an open wound on the cornea, the transparent layer that covers the eye. It is usually caused by an infection (bacterial, viral, or fungal), but can also result from trauma, foreign bodies, or improper use of contact lenses.

Why can contact lenses cause ulcers?

The risk increases when:

  • You sleep with your lenses on.
  • You don’t wash your hands before handling them.

  • You don’t replace them on time or reuse disposable lenses.

  • You clean the case or lenses with tap water or saliva.

  • You don’t follow your eye care provider’s instructions.

These habits can allow microorganisms to stick to the lens and come into contact with the cornea, leading to infection.

If you wear contact lenses and experience any of these symptoms, consult your ophthalmologist immediately:

  • Severe eye pain

  • Persistent eye redness

  • Foreign body sensation

  • Excessive tearing

  • Blurred vision

  • Sensitivity to light

  • Eye discharge

How to prevent them:

  • Always wash your hands before handling your lenses.

  • Use recommended solutions—never tap water.

  • Don’t sleep in your lenses unless advised by your ophthalmologist.

  • Replace your lenses as directed.

  • Attend your regular eye check-ups.
