Eye injuries are injuries that affect the eyeball, orbit, or surrounding tissues. They can range from minor injuries to serious vision-threatening medical emergencies. In this blog, we will explore the different types of eye injuries, how to act in the event of an accident, and preventive measures to care for your visual health.

Types of eye trauma:

  • Eye Contusions: Also known as a "black eye," these injuries result from direct blows to the eye. Although they are often painful, in most cases they do not cause permanent damage.
  • Foreign body in the eye: Small particles such as dust, chips, or displaced contact lenses can cause irritation and inflammation. It is essential not to rub the eye and seek medical attention if the foreign body is not removed by blinking.
  • Penetrating Injuries – Caused by objects piercing the eye, these injuries are extremely serious and require immediate medical attention to prevent permanent damage.
  • Orbital Fractures: Strong blows can result in fractures of the bones surrounding the eye. Symptoms can include swelling, pain, and double vision.

What to do in case of eye trauma?:

  1. Stay calm: In the event of an eye injury, it is essential to remain calm in order to take appropriate action.
  2. Cleaning: If there is a foreign body in the eye, avoid rubbing it. Instead, gently rinse with water or saline.
  3. Do not self-medicate: avoid putting any substance in the eye unless recommended by a medical professional.
  4. Cover the eye: If there is a penetrating object, do not try to remove it. Cover the eye with a protective shield, such as a cut-out plastic cup, and seek immediate medical attention.
  5. Seek medical attention: With any serious eye injury, it is crucial to seek urgent medical attention. Even seemingly minor injuries can have serious consequences if not treated properly.
