What is keratoconjunctivitis?
09 January 2025
Keratoconjunctivitis is an eye condition characterized by simultaneous inflammation of the cornea (keratitis) and the conjunctiva (conjunctivitis). This condition can significantly affect vision if not treated in time.
What causes keratoconjunctivitis?
Causes include:
1. Viral infections: Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, caused by adenoviruses, is highly contagious.
2. Bacterial infections: Some bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus can cause this inflammation.
3. Allergies: Environmental factors such as pollen or dust can trigger allergic keratoconjunctivitis.
4. Dry eyes: Dry keratoconjunctivitis occurs due to insufficient tear production.
5. Environmental factors: Long-term exposure to chemical irritants or ultraviolet radiation.
Common symptoms
They may vary depending on the cause, including:
- Redness of the eye
- Excessive tearing
- Photophobia (sensitivity to light)
- Feeling of a foreign body in the eye
- Mucous or watery discharge
- Blurred vision
- Pain or burning in the eyes
Available treatments
Treatment will depend on the underlying cause:
- Infectious: antivirals, antibiotics, or antibacterial drops are used.
- Allergic: antihistamines and artificial tears are recommended.
- Dry eyes: artificial tears, lubricating gels, or devices to retain moisture are used.
- Environmental causes: avoid irritants and wear protective glasses in hostile environments.
Prevention
- Maintain good eye hygiene.
- Avoid touching your eyes with dirty hands.
- Do not share towels, contact lenses, or makeup.
- Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV radiation.
