What is myopia and astigmatism?
01 August 2024
Myopia, also known as nearsightedness or nearsightedness, is a refractive defect in which nearby objects are seen clearly, but distant objects appear blurry. This occurs because light entering the eye is focused in front of the retina instead of directly on it.
Causes
- Eyeball length: an eyeball that is longer than normal.
- Cornea curvature: a cornea that is too curved in relation to the length of the eye.
- Genetic and environmental factors: Myopia tends to run in families and can be influenced by activities that require close focusing, such as reading or using electronic devices.
Astigmatism, on the other hand, is a refractive defect that causes blurred and/or distorted vision at any distance. This is due to an irregular curvature of the cornea or lens, causing light to focus on multiple points on the retina instead of just one.
Causes
- Irregular curvature of the cornea: the shape of the cornea is not perfectly round.
- Problems with the lens: the lens has an irregular shape.
- Genetics: astigmatism can also be inherited.
SMILE PRO procedure for the correction of myopia and astigmatism
At our center we have the most modern and least invasive refractive surgery for the correction of myopia and astigmatism: SMILE PRO. This procedure uses a femtosecond laser to create a small lenticule of corneal tissue within the cornea to correct refractive errors.
