¿Por qué la visión cambia durante el embarazo?
05 February 2026
Pregnancy brings many changes to the body, and vision is no exception. Many women notice that the way they see the world changes temporarily during these months—and there’s a scientific explanation for it.
Most common vision changes during pregnancy
1. Dry eyes
Hormonal changes can reduce tear production, causing burning, itching, or irritation. This may make contact lenses uncomfortable.
2. Temporary blurred vision
Fluid retention can affect the curvature of the cornea, leading to blurred vision or changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions.
3. Eye pressure
Some women experience a slight decrease in intraocular pressure. This is usually not serious, but it should be monitored if you have glaucoma or a pre-existing eye condition.
4. Changes in light perception
Sensitivity to light may increase, and some women notice halos around lights, especially at night.
5. Edema and fluid retention
Swelling can affect the eyelids and the tissues around the eyes, causing a feeling of heavy eyes or slightly distorted vision.
When should you see a specialist?
If you notice any of the following symptoms during pregnancy, it’s important to see an ophthalmologist immediately:
-
Blurred vision that doesn’t improve with rest
-
Flashes of light or the appearance of “floaters”
-
Intense eye pain
-
Sudden changes in vision
These signs could indicate complications such as preeclampsia, which can also affect vision and requires urgent medical attention. Book your appointment here.
