Astigmatism: Symptoms and Causes
22 October 2021
Astigmatism is a common - and generally treatable - flaw in the curvature of the eye, causing blurred near and far vision.
Astigmatism occurs when the front surface of the eye (cornea), or the lens inside the eye, has irregular curves: instead of having a curvature like a round ball, the surface is oval. Which causes blurry vision at any distance.
Astigmatism often occurs at birth and can occur in conjunction with nearsightedness or farsightedness. It is often not that serious, and corrective action is not necessary. When it is, the treatment options are corrective lenses or surgery.
Here are some of the signs and symptoms of astigmatism:
- Blurred or distorted vision
- Eye tiredness or discomfort
- Headaches
- Difficulty with night vision
- Squint your eyes
