Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common complications of diabetes and a leading cause of vision loss among working-age adults. This condition affects the blood vessels of the retina and can progress silently if not detected early, leading to irreversible changes.

Dr. Patricia Fernández, a Retina and Vitreous Specialist at Instituto Espaillat Cabral, explains that the damage occurs when elevated blood sugar levels weaken the retinal blood vessels, causing leakage, swelling, or the growth of abnormal blood vessels that can seriously compromise vision.

“Diabetic retinopathy may not present noticeable symptoms in its early stages. By the time a patient experiences blurred vision, dark spots, or vision loss, the disease may already be advanced. That is why we strongly emphasize the importance of regular eye examinations,” says Dr. Fernández.

Everyone diagnosed with diabetes, whether type 1 or type 2, should undergo a comprehensive eye examination at least once a year. This exam should include pupil dilation. Clinical studies have shown that proper control of blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels is also essential in reducing the risk of disease progression.

In its early stages, diabetic retinopathy can often be managed through close monitoring and proper metabolic control. In more advanced cases, treatments such as intravitreal injections, laser therapy, or vitreoretinal surgery can help preserve vision and prevent further complications.

“The message is clear: diabetes does not only affect blood sugar levels—it can also affect your eyesight. Early detection can make the difference between preserving and losing vision,” emphasizes the specialist.

Instituto Espaillat Cabral is equipped with advanced technology and a specialized team dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases, providing comprehensive and personalized care for patients with diabetes and other eye conditions.
