What is eye strain?
05 October 2021
When we expose our eyes to a task for too long, we can experience what is called eye fatigue or asthenopia. This does not cause permanent damage to our eyes, but it can cause us a lot of discomfort.
Drive; fix your eyes on the television, phone or tablet; read for hours; sitting near drafts from fans or air conditioners; wearing the wrong glasses; working in a very bright or poorly lit environment are tasks that can cause eye fatigue when performed for extended periods.
Some tips to take care of our eyes
- Establish breaks when we are doing activities that require visual effort.
- Grade the fans, and don't direct them directly to our face.
- Protect our eyes from the sun with glasses with UV protection.
- Using artificial tears when your eyes feel dry.
- Wear glasses or contact lenses with the correct prescription.
- Use adequate lighting.
If taking the proper precautions you still continue to experience eye strain, make an appointment with your ophthalmologist.
