One of the most common myths surrounding cataracts is the belief that they can be treated, or even eliminated, with the use of eye drops. This idea, although widespread, has no scientific basis. Cataracts are not cured with medications, supplements, or any topical treatment. The only effective and safe way to treat a cataract is through surgery.

Cataracts occur when the crystalline lens, the eye's natural lens—which is normally transparent—begins to cloud over time. This process prevents light from passing clearly to the retina, causing blurred vision, light sensitivity, difficulty seeing at night, and a permanent foggy feeling, among other symptoms. While this condition is more common after the age of 60, it can also occur in younger people due to genetic factors, systemic diseases such as diabetes, trauma, or prolonged use of certain medications.

Currently, there is no drop that can reverse this physical change in the lens. Some formulations may relieve discomfort or symptoms related to dry eyes or eye strain, but they do not stop or eliminate the opacity caused by a cataract.

The good news is that cataract surgery is a highly safe and effective procedure. Using advanced techniques, such as laser-assisted phacoemulsification, the cloudy lens is replaced with a customized intraocular lens, restoring vision.

If you notice that your vision has begun to progressively deteriorate, especially in low-light conditions, or if you have been diagnosed with cataracts and have been recommended eye drops as the only solution, we invite you to seek a second opinion. At the Espaillat Cabral Institute, we have cataract surgery specialists and cutting-edge technology to offer you an accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment.
