Makeup and eyes: safe practices to avoid irritation
25 September 2025
Makeup can enhance natural beauty and become part of many people’s daily routine. However, when it comes to the eyes, improper use of cosmetic products can cause irritation, infections, or even more serious eye health problems.
Below, we share some safe practices to enjoy makeup without compromising your eye health:
1. Choose quality products
Opt for hypoallergenic, dermatologically approved cosmetics. Avoid products of questionable origin or with irritating ingredients, as the eyelids and ocular surface are very sensitive areas.
2. Do not share your makeup
Eyeliner, mascara, and eyeshadows are for personal use only. Sharing them increases the risk of spreading bacteria or fungi that can cause conjunctivitis and other infections.
3. Pay attention to expiration dates
Mascara and liquid eyeliners tend to accumulate bacteria easily. Ideally, replace them every three to four months. Using expired products is one of the most common causes of eye irritation.
4. Always remove your makeup before bed
Sleeping with makeup can block the glands of the eyelids, promote dry eyes, and cause styes. Use gentle, eye-specific makeup removers.
5. Apply carefully
Avoid lining the inner rim of the eyelid, as this area contains glands that produce the tear film, and blockage can lead to discomfort. Apply makeup on the outer area for greater safety.
6. Be cautious if you wear contact lenses
Insert your contact lenses first, then apply your makeup. When removing makeup, reverse the order: take out your lenses before cleansing. This reduces the risk of particles getting into your eyes.
7. Stop use if you notice discomfort
If you experience redness, itching, tearing, or pain, stop using eye makeup immediately and consult your ophthalmologist.
