The sun, the source of life and energy, also emits ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can be harmful to our health. In particular, our eyes – with their delicate skin and sensitive tissues – are susceptible to damage from unprotected sun exposure. In this article, we will explore how UV radiation may be related to eyelid tumors and how we can take steps to protect our eyes.

The vulnerability of the skin of the eyelids

The skin that covers the eyelids is thinner and more fragile than on other parts of the body. This thinness makes the eyelids especially vulnerable to the damaging effects of UV radiation. Additionally, the eyelids do not have as much protective pigment as other areas of the skin, further increasing their susceptibility to damage.

UV radiation, especially UVA and UVB rays, can damage skin cells. When the eyelid skin is chronically exposed to unprotected UV radiation, cumulative damage can increase the risk of developing eyelid tumors. The tumors can be benign or malignant, and it is essential to pay attention to any changes in the eyelids.

Eye protection measures

  • Sunglasses: Choose sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection. Look for glasses with labels that indicate UVA and UVB blocking.
  • Eye sunscreen: Although the skin on the eyelids is delicate, there are sunscreens designed specifically for the eyes. Use them sparingly and following the manufacturer's directions.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure: limit the time you spend in the sun, especially during the hours when UV radiation is most intense (10 am to 4 pm).

Self-exams and medical check-ups

Perform periodic self-exams. If you notice any changes, such as bumps, persistent irritation, or changes in skin color, see an eye care professional. Regular medical checkups are essential for the early detection and treatment of any eye problems.
