What can eye plastic surgery do?
08 February 2024
Ocular Plastic Surgery, also known as Oculoplasty, is a subspecialty of ophthalmology that goes beyond the search for external beauty. It focuses on improving both the aesthetics and function of the eyelids, addressing a variety of problems that can affect ocular health and facial appearance. Among these problems are:
1. Obstructions of the tear ducts
Blockages in the tear ducts can result in chronic watery eyes, irritation, and, in more severe cases, recurrent infections. Oculoplasty offers procedures to correct these blockages, often involving opening or reconstructing the tear ducts. Restoring normal tear flow not only relieves bothersome symptoms, but also prevents long-term complications.
2. Eye orbit problems, such as thyroid orbitopathy
The ocular orbit, which houses the eye and its surrounding structures, can be affected by conditions such as thyroid orbitopathy. This disorder can cause swelling, exophthalmos (bulging eyes), and affect eye function. Oculoplasty addresses these problems through surgical procedures that seek to restore normal function of the orbit and improve facial aesthetics.
3. Abnormal positions of the eyelids and eyelashes
Abnormal eyelid positions, such as ectropion (eyelids turned out) or entropion (eyelids turned in), can cause eye discomfort, dryness, and in extreme cases, damage to the cornea. Oculoplasty corrects these abnormal positions, returning the proper alignment of the eyelids and eyelashes. This not only increases comfort, but also preserves eye health.
4. Improves the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids
Blepharoplasty is a common cosmetic procedure in oculoplasty. In this procedure, excess skin and fat around the eyes is removed, reducing the so-called eye bags. This surgery not only rejuvenates the appearance of the eyelids, but can also improve vision by removing visual obstacles caused by excess skin.
5. Facial rejuvenation for wrinkles and expression lines
In addition to addressing specific eye problems, oculoplasty contributes to facial rejuvenation. Applying botulinum toxin is a popular option for smoothing wrinkles and expression lines around the eyes. This treatment not only improves overall facial aesthetics, but also offers effective results with minimal risks.
