Inability to close eyelids
02 March 2023
Lagophthalmos is a condition that prevents the eyes from closing completely. If the problem only occurs during sleep, it is called nocturnal lagophthalmos.
The condition itself is usually harmless, but it can damage the eyes.
Lagophthalmos can also be a symptom of more serious conditions, so it is important to see your doctor if you have trouble blinking or closing your eyes to sleep.
The main symptom is not being able to close your eyes. If you have nocturnal lagophthalmos, you may not even know it. Look for these additional symptoms in one or both eyes if you think you have this condition:
- increased tearing
- foreign body sensation, i.e., the feeling of something rubbing against the eye
- pain or irritation, especially in the morning
One of the causes of lagophthalmos is injury to the seventh cranial nerve, which controls the eyelid muscles. It is also known as the facial nerve. There are many factors that can damage the facial nerve, including:
- injury, either from blunt trauma or a deep cut.
- stroke
- Bell's palsy
From a medical history and physical examination, the ophthalmologist will find out the underlying cause of lagophthalmos. Be sure to inform your doctor of any recent injuries or infections.
