Importance of taking care of your eyes in the sun
07 April 2022
Many people protect their skin from the sun, but not everyone knows how important it is to protect their eyes from excessive solar radiation. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that every year more than 3 million people are blinded by excessive solar radiation.
Consideration should be given to:
- Always wear sunglasses that block 100% of UV rays to protect the eyes.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and never look directly at the sun, even with glasses or on cloudy days.
- Avoid wearing contact lenses in water. If you do, pay more attention to hygiene to avoid any complications.
By spending many hours outdoors and in front of the sun, we can easily expose our eyes to an excess of ultraviolet radiation (UV rays) that can be harmful. Exposure to direct sunlight for longer than necessary can cause dry and irritated eyes, as well as corneal burns.
In addition to the above, the sun's ultraviolet rays can cause irreversible damage to the retina and even lead to permanent blindness; they can also affect the front of the eye and cause cataracts, conjunctival tumors or other conditions.
Just like UV protection of the skin, protection of children's eyes is especially important because they are much more sensitive than adults.
In our Optician's we have a wide variety of sunglasses for adults and children.
