Rubbing your eyes is a habit that worsens keratoconus
19 September 2024
Keratoconus is a disease that thins and deforms the cornea, affecting vision. Although rubbing your eyes seems harmless, this habit is especially harmful to those who suffer from this condition, accelerating its progress and aggravating symptoms.
Why does rubbing your eyes make keratoconus worse?
1. Thinning of the cornea: the pressure exerted by rubbing your eyes further weakens the cornea, which is already fragile in people with keratoconus.
2. Increased risk of infections: rubbing your eyes damages the eye's natural protection, facilitating infections.
3. Inflammation: rubbing stimulates eye inflammation, creating a cycle of irritation and more rubbing.
How to avoid this habit?
- If you feel itchy or irritated eyes, use lubricating drops or cold compresses to relieve symptoms.
- In case of allergies, consult an ophthalmologist to receive the appropriate treatment.
- Keep your hands away from your eyes, and if you feel the need to rub them, try blinking several times or washing your eyes with clean water or saline solution.
Symptoms of keratoconus
The main symptoms of keratoconus include:
- Blurred or distorted vision
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Need to frequently change glasses prescription
The good news is that today there are effective treatments to slow the progression of keratoconus, such as corneal crosslinking, which strengthens the cornea and prevents its deterioration. In more severe cases, the use of intracorneal rings or corneal transplants can restore vision.
If we identify the disease early, we have a better chance of avoiding complications and preserving the patient's vision.
