Encouraging exercise and eating healthy foods from childhood will result in the formation of good habits that will accompany you for the rest of your life. The use of these nutrients is associated with a lower risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts, and dry eye in middle age. Eating healthy food produces benefits at any age.Eating foods with a low glycemic index (GI) offers a potential benefit for people with diabetes or age-related macular degeneration, or for those who are at risk for them. Most people with diabetes, and those who have followed a low glycemic index diet to lose weight, are familiar with the low GI food charts.

The glycemic index represents the rate at which the carbohydrates contained in a food increase the levels of glycemia (blood sugar); low GI foods produce fewer blood glucose fluctuations.Citrus fruits, vegetable oils, walnuts, whole grains, dark-colored vegetables, and cold-water fish are excellent for eye health. Research has shown that eating dark green leafy vegetables, and colorful fruits and vegetables rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, can reduce your risk of developing AMD.
