Celebrations are ideal times to open a bottle of champagne, but this symbolic act can become a danger if not done with caution. Here are some tips to protect your eyes when opening bottles.

1. The risk of corks

Corks can be thrown out at high speeds, which can cause serious eye injuries, including corneal abrasions, retinal detachment and even vision loss.

2. Tips for opening the bottle safely

  • Chill the bottle properly: the pressure inside the bottle is more manageable when it is very cold (between 7 and 10 degrees Celsius).
  • Avoid shaking the bottle: this increases the internal pressure and the risk of the cork being thrown out of control.
  • Tilt the bottle at a 45-degree angle: this directs the cork to a safe place, away from people.
  • Hold the cork firmly: turn the bottle (not the cork) slowly while holding the cork with your other hand for control.
  • Cover the cork with a towel – this helps contain it in case it breaks free quickly.

3. What to do if an eye accident occurs?

  • Do not rub the affected eye.
  • Rinse with clean water if any particles are visible.
  • Seek immediate medical attention to prevent further damage.
