Holy Week is not only a time of deep religious reflection, but also a time to enjoy the beautiful beaches, spas and swimming pools that our country offers. However, spending long hours under the tropical sun can present challenges for eye health. Here are some tips to take care of your eyes while you immerse yourself in the crystal clear waters and enjoy the beach atmosphere.

1. Protect your eyes from the sun

The tropical sun can be intense, so it's essential to protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Wear sunglasses with adequate UV protection to reduce the risk of corneal burns, cataracts, and other eye problems. Opt for polarized lenses to reduce glare and improve visual clarity while you enjoy the sea and sand.

2. Avoid red eye

Red eye, caused by irritation of the blood vessels on the ocular surface, can be common after long hours in salt or chlorinated water. To prevent red eye, avoid rubbing your eyes with dirty hands and wear swimming goggles to protect your eyes from chlorine and other chemicals in pools. Also, wash your eyes with clean water after swimming to remove any irritating residue.

3. Eye hydration

Heat and sun exposure can cause dry eyes, especially when you're at the beach or pool. Keep your eyes hydrated by using artificial tears or lubricating eye drops as needed. Apply these drops before and after swimming to maintain a healthy tear film and prevent dryness and irritation.

4. Limit time underwater

Although swimming is a refreshing and fun activity, spending long periods with your eyes open underwater can cause eye irritation and dryness. Limit the time you spend submerged and remember to blink regularly to distribute tear fluid and keep your eyes lubricated.

5. Rest your eyes

Between dips, take some time to rest your eyes from the glare of the sun and the reflection of the water. Find a shady spot where you can relax and close your eyes briefly to reduce eye strain and allow your eyes to recover from the stress caused by bright light.

6. Schedule an eye exam after the holidays

After enjoying your days at the beach or pool, schedule an eye exam with an ophthalmologist to make sure your eyes are in good health. A regular checkup can catch any eye problems early and give you peace of mind that you're taking proper care of your vision.
