How to prevent and treat dry eyes in a digital world
25 April 2024
In the digital age, our prolonged exposure to screens on devices such as computers, phones and tablets can cause dry eyes, a syndrome that results in symptoms such as burning, itching and blurred vision. When we focus on screens, we tend to blink less frequently, which reduces the distribution of tears and increases their evaporation.
Dry eyes is a condition in which the eyes do not produce enough tears or the tears produced are not of adequate quality to keep the eyes lubricated. This can cause a number of uncomfortable symptoms, such as itching, burning, foreign body sensation, and blurred vision.
To prevent and treat dry eyes in this digital environment, there are several strategies that we can adopt:
1- Take regular breaks
It is essential to take regular breaks while working in front of the computer or using digital devices. The "20-20-20" rule is helpful: Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds to rest your eyes.
2- Blink consciously
Because we blink less frequently when looking at screens, it's important to make a conscious effort to blink more often to keep your eyes lubricated naturally.
3- Adjust the screen settings
Reduce the screen brightness and adjust the contrast to make it more comfortable for your eyes. Additionally, consider using anti-glare filters on your devices to reduce the amount of blue light emitted, which can contribute to eye strain.
4- Use lubricating drops
Applying lubricating drops or artificial tears as needed can help keep your eyes hydrated and relieve feelings of dryness.
5- Consult an ophthalmologist
If you experience persistent symptoms of dry eyes, it is important to schedule an appointment with an ophthalmologist. They will be able to evaluate your symptoms and recommend additional treatments, such as medications or procedures, to relieve eye discomfort.
