Eye burning is usually a stinging and irritating sensation in the eyes. It can also cause itching or tearing, as well as eye discharge. It is uncomfortable and can be a health problem.

Symptoms that accompany eye burning may include:

  • itching
  • dryness
  • redness
  • discharge

Eye burning has many possible causes, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). These causes can be environmental, medical or related to chemicals that come in contact with the eye.

Blepharitis

Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelids. Symptoms may include:

  • red eyes
  • puffy eyes
  • sore eyes
  • scaly or oily particles at the base of the eyelids

Dry eye

Dry eyes occur when there is not enough natural lubrication or tears to nourish or lubricate the eyes. The eyes need tears and moisture to be healthy.

Allergies

Eye allergies occur when irritating substances enter the eye or when the eye reacts to an allergen. Eye allergies are quite common, and often occur along with nasal allergies.

Ocular rosacea

Rosacea is a skin condition that causes flushing of the face, including the cheeks and forehead. People with rosacea often also have ocular rosacea, which can cause swelling of the eyelids.

Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis occurs when an infection or allergen irritates the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is the clear tissue that lines the white part of the eye.
